Exercise always has been and always will be an important part of having a healthy body. Pregnancy is just an extra special time and even more reason to stay (or get) in shape. It basically comes down to keeping your body moving in ways that are safe for Mama and baby! There are some exercises and activities that may not be safe during pregnancy. So just be mindful of what they are. If you have any doubts or wonders what those are, just ask your doctor.
Exercising during pregnancy is good for Mama from head to toe, including that bundle of joy you are growing inside of that adorable bump! According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), mama should perform at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day, for at least, most days of the week. Cardio, such as walking or swimming are among the safest and most beneficial. Are you a runner? Need a little more speed? You can continue to run, as long as you do not over-do it. Listen to your body. Of course, make sure it is OK with your doctor. More exercises that you can do are low-impact aerobics and dance workouts, stair climbers, ellipticals, and indoor cycling. All of these are great during pregnancy. Want to exercise, but not so much cardio? Try barre, pilates, or weight-lifting! These are great for strength training. Whatever exercise program you choose, you can find all kinds of videos to help on social media. YouTube has some great videos with some great instructors! A couple of my faves are Move Your Bump & The Bloom Method. Two rules of thumb; always consult your doctor before starting or continuing any exercise program & always listen to your body.
What are the benefits of exercising during pregnancy? WOW! There are so many benefits to exercising during pregnancy! It can reduce backaches, constipation, bloating, and swelling. It can help you sleep better. It can help prevent excess weight gain. It can promote muscle tone, endurance, and strength. Which can help a lot during labor. It can even help decrease your risk of gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. It can also help decrease your risk of needing a cesarean delivery. Unless, of course, that is your chosen way of birthing. On days that you are just too tired to do anything, ahem, because you are growing a human, if you can manage to exercise, even just a little, it can boost your mood and energy levels! I have had a few (several) of those days. But, the days that I actually managed to get up & move around a little, I felt much better! My mood and energy level did, in fact, improve!! Just make sure that you choose a program or exercises that are safe during pregnancy!
